New Year's Resolutions to Help With Back Pain

There are a few very easy things you can do this new year if you experience back pain. Below we outline some of the easiest to implement into your everyday lifestyle.

Exercise regularly

Building your core muscles may help lower the risk of back injuries and lower chronic pain in your back. Why not attempt a simple workout at least two times a week doing exercises that will build on your back and abdominal muscles. If you sit at a desk every day, try to get up and walk around when you can throughout the day.

Improving your posture

Standing up straight will help to protect your spine and keep it strong. Bad posture puts a strain on your back and can change your spine. You must avoid slouching, hunching your shoulders or bending sideways while you are standing.

Quit smoking

Smoking isn’t just bad for your overall health but also harmful to your back. Smokers are much more likely to have back pain than people who choose not to smoke. Nicotine restricts the flow of blood to the discs in your spine, which makes them more prone to ruptures, cracks or drying out. Smoking can also decrease the oxygen level in your blood, which is crucial for keeping your back’s muscles and tendons nourished.

Adopt a healthy diet

Maintaining a diet which is full antioxidants and high in calcium and vitamin D will help in keeping your spine stronger. Deficiencies in calcium and vitamin D can lead to problems such as osteoporosis, which is a frequent cause of back pain for older women.
