ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC
What is chiropractic treatment?
Chiropractic treatment is widely used in healthcare, treating the spine to help conditions that are related to bones, muscles and joints. Chiropractors use their hands to treat these musculoskeletal issues, applying pressure with their hands to make chiropractic adjustments. These treatments can be extremely beneficial for migraines, neck related headaches and other problems that involve the movement of your joints. Dysfunction of the spine, joints, or muscles can manifest itself as pain, often causing low back pain, neck pain or cervicogenic headaches. It may also cause irritation to the nervous system, which may lead to symptoms such as arm (Brachialgia) or leg pain (Sciatica). Chiropractic is best known for the treatment of back pain, neck pain and cervicogenic headaches. However, we also treat many other conditions.
As chiropractic is a primary healthcare profession, you do not need to be referred by your doctor (unless it is a requirement of your health insurance company). Many of our patients are, however, recommended to see us by their doctors.
The manipulation of joints (‘adjustments’) is commonly the main basis of chiropractic care for your condition. However, your Chiropractor may also employ other procedures in the course of your care. These may include more management including manipulation/ mobilisation, myofascial dry needling, home exercises and postural correction. You may also be advised to make lifestyle adjustments such as dietary changes, workstation and posture alterations, and exercise programmes. The use of heat or cold therapy may also be advised. If your chiropractor considers that your condition would be better managed by another healthcare practitioner or your GP we will refer you to them.
What is a chiropractic adjustment and manipulation?
A chiropractic adjustment is a skilled type of therapy performed by trained professionals. Using their hands, chiropractors manipulate a joint in a specific direction with the aim of restoring motion, improving function and alleviating pain. From severe back and neck pain to sports injuries, chiropractic treatment can successfully treat many ailments.
OUR TREATMENTS
Is the treatment painful?
It's natural to feel nervous before any kind of treatment, but our chiropractic treatments are generally painless. You may experience some mild discomfort during the session, but our team of professionals will do everything they can to help you feel at ease. It's also completely normal for your first treatment to give you the most discomfort. As you continue with your chiropractic adjustments, your pain, mobility and inflammation will begin to improve!
What are the risks?
Chiropractic carries far fewer risks than many other possible treatment options. Serious side effects are extremely uncommon. Very rarely, neck manipulation has been linked with strokes, although research has not definitively proven this and has shown that chiropractic can be one of the most effective and safest forms of treatment for certain conditions. Our treatment choices will be adapted depending on your age and likelihood of increased risk of fractures (usually older patients who may have poor bone strength) If you have ever been told that you have osteoporosis or osteopenia then please let your chiropractor know. Our Chiropractors in Sheffield will be happy to discuss any concerns that you may have or offer alternative chiropractic options for your treatment.
