Back pain can keep you up all night, but have you ever thought that the very cause could be your bed itself? There are many causes of back pain, however, if you back is not being supported at night, this can result in serious pain and discomfort.
Here are some of the top signs that your bed is causing you back pain and how to solve it.
How can your bed affect your back?
The wrong mattress
Mattresses are designed to support your back for a comfortable nights sleep, which is why it’s so important to choose the right one. Although everyone has a different preference your mattress should provide equal distribution of pressure - one that is too firm may not contour enough to your body and one that is too soft may sag and cause problems. If your mattress is over 10 years old or feels/looks like it’s lost its shape, it could be time to invest in something new.
Patients with osteoarthritis sometimes find that they need a slightly softer mattress for a better nights sleep. Likewise if you or your partner weigh more than 15 stone you may find that you are better with a firmer mattress.
Uncomfortable nights sleep/ Pain on waking
If you go to bed feeling fine but end up tossing and turning all night, or wake up feeling worse this could be because your spine is not being supported in a neutral position on your bed. As a result, you may find it difficult to settle into the right position, not only causing you pain but affecting the quality of your sleep.
Continuous pain throughout the day
A poor mattress can continue to cause problems even when you wake up. If you go to bed feeling fine but after a full nights sleep your discomfort does not settle, your bed could be to blame. Try using a pillow between your knees, when lying on your side, to support your back, check your mattress for indentations/ palpable springs. It may be time to look at upgrading your mattress.
