How Chiropractic Adjustments Work
Chiropractors use a range of techniques to reduce pain, improve function and increase mobility, including hands-on manipulation (adjustment) of the spine. Chiropractors are able to offer a package of care which includes advice on self-help, rehabilitative exercises and lifestyle changes.
Chiropractic treatment involves safe, often gentle, specific spinal adjustment to free joints in the spine or other areas of the body that are not moving properly. Apart from manipulation/ adjustment, chiropractors may use a variety of techniques including activator (a small, gentle instrument used to help achieve better spinal movement) , myofascial dry needling (use of acupuncture needles), myofascial release/ massage techniques, kinesiotaping, exercise as well as advice about posture and lifestyle.
Are There Risks?
There are risks with anything in life, but chiropractic treatment is safe when performed correctly by a trained and registered chiropractor..
It is common to experience mild to moderate aches and pains, stiffness and tiredness. However, these side effects are normally mild and should pass in a few days. More serious side effects are rare but have occasionally been reported following spine manipulation.Â
If you have a pre-existing medical condition, certain risks may increase. Your chiropractor will take a detailed medical history and examine you prior to treatment (the initial assessment). It is essential that you provide the chiropractor with accurate information regarding your medical history to enable them to choose the safest treatment for you.
Chiropractors must complete a Chiropractic Degree
Chiropractors undergo a minimum of a full 4-year degree course and must be registered with the General Chiropractic Council. They must complete continuing professional development annually.
