What to Wear to the Gym to Prevent Injuries

Exercise is a great way of staying fit, flexible and strong. However, as well as paying attention to how you’re performing your lifts or perfecting your running technique, something as small as what you wear can make a big difference too.

Here’s what you should wear to the gym to prevent injuries.

The right kind of footwear

You may think that all workout trainers are the same but that’s not the case. The type of sport or movement you’re doing will determine the most appropriate type of footwear. For example, weight lifters should choose trainers that have a flat sole as it allows you to push through the floor much easier and drive through your heels. On the other hand, runners will benefit from trainers with a light step and enough cushioning.

Shorts or leggings with enough stretch

The last thing you want is to feel restricted while exercising. Always choose shorts and leggings that have enough stretch so you can bend properly and your form is not hindered as this can cause an injury. Plus, when you feel comfortable when exercising you can concentrate on your workout and improve your focus so that unavoidable accidents don’t happen.

Protect your hands

Weight trainer lovers will know all too well how heaving barbells and dumbbells can affect your hands. As the weights you use increase, it may be a good idea to invest in gloves as they will prevent calluses on your palms and reduce the strain put on your wrists. Gloves also provide extra grip so you are at less risk of dropping the weights and hurting yourself in the process.

Keep your knees protected

If you have a history of knee complaints or you’d like extra protection, knee supports reduce the amount of strain on your joints and give you better control over your movements. Additionally, just because you’re wearing knee support doesn’t mean you should progress quicker than you are ready to. Take it slow and listen to your body!
