What is Lumbago?

Lumbago is more common than you may realise. According to research in 2018 by the British Chiropractic Association, around 50% of UK adults reported weekly back and neck pain. Sedentary lifestyles and poor posture are just two of the possible causes, but no matter your reasons for back pain, you don’t have to suffer in silence.

Here’s all you need to know about lumbago.

Is lumbago a condition?

Lumbago is a general term that refers to back pain in the lower back region - although it can also occur anywhere along the spine from the neck down. Lower back pain can affect all sexes and people of all ages ranging from mild aches to severe pain.

In most cases, lumbago is aggravated by everyday activities such a heavy lifting or repetitive movements. Lumbago reduces the function of your back muscles as a way of protecting your tensed muscles but this limited movement can cause a lot of pain. Lumbago does not damage your spin or change your discs, ligaments or vertebrae. It is categorised as non-specific back pain.

What are the symptoms of lumbago?

If your back pain is ongoing then it could be lumbago. Everybody experiences it differently, but here are some of the most common symptoms to look out for:

●     Overloaded back muscles make it difficult for you to stand up straight or walk.

●     You suffer from lower back pain that relieves last a few days at a time.

●     Your back generally feels stiff and achy.

●     The pain may spread out to other areas such as the back of your thighs, groin or buttock.

If the pain is very severe or ongoing, it’s always best to seek medical attention.

How is lumbago treated?

As common as it is, lumbago can have a negative impact on your life and cause ongoing discomfort. Luckily, there are several ways to improve your symptoms such as:

●     Arrange an appointment with a chiropractor who can assess your symptoms and relieve tension with professional massage techniques.

●     Strengthen your muscles through exercise and increased activity. Take things slowly and gradually you will increase mobility and reduce pain.
