Keeping fit is great, and for many people joining the gym is the perfect way to improve their physical and mental well-being. But, if you don’t have much experience using gym equipment or you’re recently getting back into training, you must follow safety precautions.
In this blog, we explain some of the best top tips for staying safe in the gym and preventing injury.
Have an induction
If you’ve never been to a gym before or you need reminding of how to use the equipment, always sign up for an induction session. Most gyms will offer this to new members and it’s a useful way of making you feel more comfortable and learning how to operate the equipment. Using machines in the wrong way can lead to injuries, so always ask for help and follow the directions shown at all times.
Take it steady
Once you start going to the gym regularly this can boost your confidence and create positive changes in your body. Whether it’s upping your weights or increasing your cardiovascular endurance, beating your personal best is a real achievement. However, you must take things steadily and gradually challenge yourself as pushing your body before it’s ready can result in injuries.
Rest
To get the best results from your training you must take rest days. Allowing your body to recover will help your muscles grow and ensure that you’re physically ready for your next session. Additionally, if you are feeling unwell it’s okay to skip a workout until you feel better. Going to the gym when you don’t feel 100% puts you at higher risk of injury and could escalate your illness.
Work all muscle groups
Many people tend to favour working the commonly known muscles at the gym like the pectorals, biceps, hamstrings and quadriceps. However don't forget to work the back muscles like the trapezius and rhomboids- this can be worked with rowing actions or reverse fly's these can often help with postural strain, shoulder and upper back injuries. The calf muscles are often forgotten too- theses can be helpful with knee pain.
Stretch out after your work-out
Don't forget to take some time after your session to stretch out or roller those muscle groups that you have worked.
