How to Protect Your Back at Work

Updated: Nov 22, 2024

Back pain is one of the most common ailments in the world, affecting people of all ages, especially at work. Day to day your back has a lot to deal with whether that be staying in a certain position all day, lifting heavy objects or other kinds of repetitive strain.

Protecting your back is so important to reduce long term injuries. Read on for our top tips on how to protect your back at work.

Use a back support

Office jobs or other roles that involve sitting down for long periods can often result in back pain. Take a look at your work station and identify any factors that could be contributing to your aches and pains. You need a good chair that can support your back or a back support that can help with your posture. Additionally, ensure your desk is laid out correctly so that your shoulders and elbows are relaxed at a 90-degree angle when typing.

Lift things safely

If lifting is a big part of your job then you need to follow the right lifting and handling techniques - your employer should offer health and safety training. Before you lift anything always make sure the area is free from obstructions and adopt a stable position. Always use the safety equipment provided, such as forklifts instead of attempting to move heavy objects yourself.

Stretch

Break up long periods of sitting by standing up and stretching so your muscles have a chance to relax. It’s a good idea to get away from your desk during your lunch break, perhaps go for a walk around a nearby park or simply take a loop around the area.

Exercise

The longer you go without confronting your back problems the worse they’ll get. Often, the best treatment is to stay active as this will help strengthen your muscles and keep you flexible. Yoga and pilates are a great way of treating work-related back pain, however, you should also consult a doctor or medical professional for more serious cases.
