How to Manage and Relieve Sciatic Pain During the Night

The Hillsborough Chiropractor Clinic

Many people suffer from sciatica and, for some, the pain increases at night. Sciatic pain is usually recognizable by severe shooting pain along the nerve, typically on one side. Sciatic pain can be managed through chiropractic, pain relief or through self-management. Below are some ways to help manage and relieve sciatic pain during the night:

Tips to relieve sciatic pain while sleeping

It is difficult to know where to go sometimes, you might consider osteopathy or physiotherapy for back pain, or a friend might recommend chiropractic for back pain or sciatica. Before you decide to seek treatment or whilst waiting for your appointment there are some basic adjustments that you can make to help relieve your sciatic pain during the night.

Choose the right kind of mattress

Use a medium to firm mattress to promote your spinal alignment and help with back pain or sciatica. You should not use soft mattresses as these will not support the natural curves of your spine. If you don’t have access to the right kind of bed and mattress, you may find sleeping on the floor on your mattress, is more comfortable.

Think about your sleeping position

Lie on your side with the side in pain on the top. This should reduce pain by lightening the pressure on your irritated nerve. Sleeping in the fetal position can also help by opening up the space between your vertebrae. Avoid sleeping on your front as this is likely to exacerbate the pain.

Use a pillow

Get creative with your pillow as this is a great tool for sciatica pain treatment. Firstly, you can try placing it between your knees in order to keep the spine in a neutral position and stop your legs from rotating while you sleep. If you are lying on your side, you can also use a thin  pillow to fill any gap between your waist and the mattress. If you are lying on your back, you can put the pillow under your knees which will help relax your hip flexors and maintain the curvature of your spine.

Stretch before going to bed

Some people find regular light stretching before bed is an effective sciatica treatment. Stretching exercises like the cat-cow or gently pulling one or both knees in towards your chest for 30 seconds may help to loosen muscle tension and reduce pressure on the nerve.

Why is sciatic pain worse at night?

Many people find that their symptoms get worse at night and seek out sciatica pain treatment that they can do at home to relieve any pain as soon as it starts. When you lie down at night, the pressure on your irritated nerve can be increased, especially if your sleeping position is awkward or your mattress is soft as this can cause your spine to bend while sleeping and exacerbate the problem.
