Four Tips to Reduce Neck Pain While Working

The Hillsborough Chiropractor Clinic

Many people work in offices and spend a large proportion of their day sitting at a desk. Unfortunately poor working habits such as posture or long periods of sedentary behaviour can lead to neck pain and the need for chiropractic treatment. Below we take a look at the symptoms and causes of neck pain and provide some tips to relieve discomfort while at work.

Symptoms and causes of neck pain

When you are working on a computer, the muscles in your neck have to contract in order to support your head. After long periods, muscles can get overly sore and tired and you may experience symptoms such as headaches, stiffness, neck spasms or pain between your shoulder blades. You may find that you struggle to look up after looking down for a long time. In acute cases, you could feel numbness or tingling in your arms due to an irritated nerve in your neck.

Tips for reducing neck pain at work

Here are four tips to reduce neck pain while at work.

1.  Get up and move around frequently

If you work at a computer or in a sedentary job, it is really important to get up and walk around every 30 minutes, even if just for a short time. This gets the blood circulating and releases pressure on the neck.

2.  Ensure good posture at your computer

You will need a chair with good lumbar support. Ensure that the top of your screen is approximately at eye height. Do not reach for your mouse or keyboard as this can place a prolonged pressure on the muscles of the neck and shoulder.

3.  Stand up while you work

It should be easy to sit in an office chair but the longer you sit the harder it is to hold a good posture. Getting access to a standing desk or trying to spend a couple of hours on your feet can really help improve posture and neck pain.

4.  Try some simple stretches at your desk

Stretches such as shrugging the shoulders by pulling the shoulders down the back and then rolling the shoulders up to the ears can help stimulate blood flow and reduce discomfort. You can also tilt your head slowly so that your right ear is leaning towards the right shoulder, feeling a stretch on the left side of the neck. Repeat this on the other side to get the same stretch on the left side.
