Can a Chiropractor Help Prevent Migraines?

Migraines have many causes and just as many symptoms. However, the majority of people with migraines suffer from neck and jaw pain, which are two things a chiropractor can aid you with.

Unfortunately, there have been very few studies done on migraine headaches being treated with chiropractic adjustments, but those who have used the treatment swear by it. The best way to find out for yourself is to see a chiropractor and see if there is an underlying problem that can be relieved.

How a Chiropractor Can Help with Headaches

Headaches in general may be prevented or reduced by having regular chiropractic care. Many people find that chiropractic treatments also reduce the frequency and the intensity of their migraine headaches.

Migraines may occur due to a poorly aligned spine or an irregularity that causes the spine to compress or irritate nerves. It may also affect the blood vessels that increase intercranial pressure and cause irregular blood flow. While many people suffer from migraines for no reason that doctors can find, the pain causes muscles to tighten in response and this can exacerbate the symptoms.

When the chiropractor manipulates your neck and spine, they can ease this pressure and gently release the muscles. It may not cure your migraine, but often it will help the headache fade away faster and can greatly reduce the pressure in your head.

How Chiropractic Treatment Helps Migraines

The treatment has multiple functions, all of which help reduce the pain and sensations that come with a migraine. These include:

● Aligning the spine to ensure the nerves are in the correct place and not compressed.

● Easing muscle tension, which can trigger a migraine.

● Returning the blood flow to normal, which reduces the pressure in the head.

● Reducing irritation in the nerves that transfer pain signals.

● Aids the body in healing itself.

● Increases the body’s own strength and builds support for the spine.

Your chiropractor may also help you determine what your triggers are, which can help you avoid them in the future. Fewer triggers mean less pain for you.

Many people think of going to the chiropractor when they have back pain or neck pain, but when it’s something like a migraine, you may be used to not getting answers. It becomes harder to look for help when nothing else has really eased the pain. If this is the case, you should try a chiropractic treatment and see how well it works for you.

Keep in mind that this is not a one-time thing. While the chiropractor may help reduce the pain during this migraine, you’ll likely need treatment again later on. When the headaches come back, you’ll want another treatment. Regular adjustments may help remove triggers and ease migraines. Some people report having only half the number of migraines as they did before chiropractic treatments, which is a huge improvement.
