5 Chiropractor-Approved Summer Activities for Joint Pain

The Hillsborough Chiropractor Clinic

Summer is a time for outdoor activities, vacations and relaxation. But for those who suffer from joint pain, it can be difficult to participate in activities that require a lot of movement. As an expert chiropractic clinic, we understand the challenges that joint pain can pose. That's why we've put together a list of fun chiropractor-approved summer activities that can help alleviate joint pain while still allowing you to enjoy the season.

Swimming

Swimming is an excellent low-impact exercise that can help reduce joint pain. The water supports your body weight, which reduces the pressure on your joints. Swimming also strengthens the muscles around the joints, providing added support. Whether you prefer to swim laps, do water aerobics, or just splash around with the family, swimming is a great activity to try this summer. We find that some conditions may be aggravated by certain strokes. Breast stroke can aggravate lower back and neck pains (depending on your technique) so if possible try to alternate breast stroke with back stroke or front crawl. If you are not confident in the water why not consider some private lessons to build your confidence?

Pilates

Pilates  is a gentle form of exercise that can help improve flexibility and range of motion. Many pilates exercises can be modified to accommodate different levels of flexibility and joint pain. Pilates can also help strengthen the muscles around the joints, providing added support. If you are struggling with your back or neck please consider a 1:1 with a trained pilates instructor who is familiar with spinal conditions - APPI instructors tend to be very good and commonly have smaller group sessions which allow the instructors to keep a better eye on you to help with good technique.

Cycling

Cycling is another low-impact exercise that can be great for joint pain. It's a great way to get some fresh air and explore the outdoors while also getting some exercise. Cycling can help improve joint flexibility and strength, especially in the hips and knees. Consider taking a leisurely bike ride around your local park or cycling on a designated bike path this summer.

Walking

Walking is one of the easiest and most accessible forms of exercise. It's also a great way to get some vitamin D from the sun. Walking can help improve joint flexibility and strength while also reducing stress. Walking on a flat surface or using a treadmill can be a good option for those with joint pain. If you're up for a challenge, try hiking on a nature trail, but be sure to wear supportive shoes.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a gentle form of exercise that originated in China and is now practised worldwide. It involves slow, flowing movements that can help improve balance, flexibility, and joint strength. Tai Chi is low-impact and can be modified to suit different levels of fitness and joint pain. It can also help reduce stress and improve mental wellbeing. Consider taking a Tai Chi class or practising at home this summer.
