Chiropractic care, a discipline that focuses on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system, is a practice that has gained recognition and increased popularity over the years. This blog guides you through the fascinating history of chiropractic care and explains how it became the most widely used natural healthcare profession in the world.
Chiropractic care was founded in America in the late 19th century by Daniel David Palmer, a magnetic healer, and self-taught healer. In 1895, Palmer performed the first chiropractic adjustment on a janitor named Harvey Lillard, who had been deaf for 17 years. Palmer claimed to have realigned a vertebra in Lillard's spine, leading to the restoration of his hearing. This event marked the birth of chiropractic as a distinct healthcare profession.
The philosophy behind chiropractic care revolved around the concept that the body has an innate ability to heal itself. Chiropractors believed that misalignments in the spine, known as subluxations, can disrupt the nervous system's function, leading to various health issues. By correcting these subluxations through spinal adjustments, chiropractors aimed to restore the body's natural balance and promote better health.
In its early years, in the USA, chiropractic faced significant opposition from the medical community. Doctors demanded that the profession be eliminated and chiropractors were widely regarded as ‘quacks’. This led to legal battles and the establishment of chiropractic licensing boards to protect the practice. Despite these challenges, chiropractic gained recognition and acceptance as more patients experienced its benefits.
Throughout the 20th century, chiropractic care continued to grow in popularity. The establishment of chiropractic colleges and associations helped in standardising education and promoting research. Chiropractors began to focus not only on spinal adjustments but also on overall wellness, including nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle modifications. In the UK Chiropractic is a regulated profession, the General Chiropractic Council was established to ensure all people claiming to be a chiropractor were thoroughly trained.Registration with the GCC means that chiropractors are committed to providing the highest quality of care and professionalism to their patients. All Chiropractors in the UK must have completed a Chiropractic degree, undergo ongoing continual professional development and must be registered with the GCC in order to practice legally.
Today, chiropractic care has become an integral part of mainstream healthcare. Chiropractors work in collaboration with medical doctors, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive patient care. They treat a wide range of conditions, such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, and sports injuries, using a variety of techniques, including manual adjustments, mobilisation, muscle release techniques, medical acupuncture (myofascial dry needling), and rehabilitation exercises.
Over the years, chiropractic care has undergone extensive scientific research to support its effectiveness. Studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments can help reduce pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall well-being. This growing body of evidence has further strengthened the credibility of chiropractic care within the medical community.

I had bad low back pain following a spell of gardening. Very painful moving around and agony trying to sit down. I found the clinic on the internet and they were accommodating in setting up an appointment. The Clinic itself is well-organised, friendly and COVID-safe. My chiropractor, Naomi, was extremely competent and I trusted her completely. She explained everything she was doing and listened to the problems. I am now completely ok after a course of only 6 sessions. I am back running and gardening but have learned how to take care of my back
Thank you, Naomi!
I thoroughly recommend both Naomi and the Clinic!
Amazing service, after several horse riding accidents my back was in quite a sorry state. Sonia has worked wonders and while there’s still a lot of strengthening to go I’m optimistic towards the future.
Toby is great and have been going for years. Definitely recommend

Been going to see Bal for about 7 months and I am feeling all the better for it. Highly recommend.
