A Brief Guide to Different Types of Sports Massage

Sports massages are a great way of keeping your body injury-free and enhancing long-term muscle performance especially if you’re a professional athlete. However, having a sports massage isn’t just about soothing post-training tension as there are many different sports-related occasions when massage is needed.

In this blog, we explain four types of sports massages and why they’re needed.

Training massage

Rest days are important for all kinds of sports including weight training, athletics, swimming and more as the downtime gives your body a chance to recover. During these periods where you are training, sports massages are a great way of reducing tension, inflammation, strains and injuries. Intense training can take a toll on your physical condition but sports massages will provide an effective treatment alongside your training.

Pre-event massage

In the lead up to sporting events, you’ll need to get your body into optimal condition. A pre-event massage will stretch and loosen the muscles so you are physically relaxed enough to perform your movements well with a full range of motion. Additionally, massages can prepare you mentally and de-stress you before you compete.

Post-event massage

As well as having a massage before an event you also need to take care of your body after the event. When you’ve pushed your body to the fullest it’s important to wind down and focus on tight muscle areas and promote circulation. The better you take care of your body post-event the easier it will be to recover in the days and weeks following your event as this will help you stay in top form.

Rehabilitation massage

If you’re recovering from an injury then you must take extra care of your body. Pushing yourself too hard and not taking the right recovery steps can cause further injuries and a longer recovery time. On the other hand, rehabilitative sports massage sessions can reduce pain and aid recovery so you can get back to your sport in the safest way possible.
